The World Clinical Laser Institute (WCLI) is more than an educational association of dentists seeking clinical knowledge and tips on the latest technologies in dentistry. The largest group of its kind, the WCLI is a closely-knit network of thousands of dental professionals who share a passion for improving the patient experience, elevating their clinical results to the highest level, and building the best possible practice they can.
The WCLI has been putting on world-class educational events for over ten years. At this year’s Asia Pacific Symposium in Dubai, dental professionals will improve their knowledge and techniques for established laser procedures, such as laser-assisted periodontal treatment, endo, implant placement, pain therapy and cosmetic dentistry.
Above all else, the WCLI’s 2020 Asia Pacific Symposium is a great place to see old friends, meet new colleagues and forge friendships with mentors from around the world.

Greetings from Malaysian Dental Association (MDA)! MIDEC, the very much awaited largest dental meet in Malaysia will be back on 11th – 14th July 2019. After much deliberation and consideration, the MDA Council has taken the bold step to secure Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) as the event venue for the next 3 consecutive years beginning in 2019. What’s even more exciting is that MIDEC 2019 has the privilege to be second event in Malaysia to be utilising the spanking new expansion building of KLCC. We trust that this will bring MIDEC to a higher level of event management, to cater for the demanding need to propel MIDEC to be more global and be recognised as an internationally awaited meet in this region of the globe on the calendar. My dear colleagues, please do keep abreast on the updates on our website for updates of the upcoming MIDEC 2019.
The Exhibition Halls in the new location of KLCC is just impeccable and we trust that traders, both locally and abroad, will not be disappointed. A successful trade show is equally important as a well - planned scientific program. On this note, we urge dental traders to constantly to be vigilant on the opening of booth sales so as not to be missed out on this golden opportunity to take part in this meet.
Please do mark out your calendars and make early travelling plans for MIDEC 2019. We sincerely look forward to your participation and to meet all of you at KLCC. Thank you.

**Synopsis**
The research on the bioactive lipid sphingosine 1-phosphate has focussed specifically on the role of sphingosine kinase 1 and 2 (the enzymes that catalyse formation of sphingosine 1-phosphate) and
sphingosine 1-phosphate receptors in the control of cell biology in health and disease. Specific investigation has been on the functional interaction of S1P receptors with oncogenes in cancer and
the role of receptors in micro-environmental niche interaction between cancer cells and fibroblasts. The research has also investigated the role of sphingosine kinase in regulating cell survival, migration and growth of cancer cells. Sphingosine kinases and S1P receptors represent targets for a potential therapeutic intervention in the treatment of cancer, inflammation, cardiovascular diseases and infection. Their role in disease and opportunities for novel drug discovery in this area will be discussed.

Ungku Aziz, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya.
Selection of Mode of Presentation
Selection of the mode of presentation online does not confirm your choice. The Dental Students
Scientific Committee reserves the right to determine the mode of selection for each group.
However, your preferred mode of presentation will be taken into account during the decision
making process. The committee will announce the mode of presentation for each group by 19 th

Choose your preferred mode of presentation carefully. There are limited places for each mode of
presentation. Priority will be given on a first-come first-served basis.
Only ONE person per group is allowed to make the selection for their group. If more than one
person per group has made more than one selection, their choices will be defaulted and priority
will be given to the other group who was not able to make the selection.
Groups may choose either “Option 1 : Oral Presentation” or “Option 2 : Poster
Presentation”.
Students will be allowed to upload abstract and choose mode of presentation from 12 am on

Implementing A Risk Assessment Strategy In Clinical Practice: Emphasis on Occlusion - Dr. John Kois
The fundamental rationale for a comprehensive treatment approach is a long-term strategy for dental health commensurate with an enhanced level of wellness for our patients. Understanding parameters of disease expression is sometimes confused because of misguided science or parameters that have led to patient adaptation. Formulating specific treatment needs based on an individual’s risk assessment has created new challenges for both the dentist and the patient. Until we have more objective data with better metrics, much of our clinical decision making will remain emotionally driven and empirical.
For example, our knowledge about occlusion has been based on gnathologic principles. These concepts are the basis of a mechanical system with focus on posterior determinants and mutual protection. If it is that simple, why can’t we predict when or why occlusal pathology develops or why can’t we always create a therapeutic occlusion? This program will focus on biologic principles necessary for developing a functional occlusion. New paradigms will be presented to enlighten participants about understanding occlusal problems.
Learning objectives:
New Perspectives on Vertical and Horizontal Augmentation - Dr. Istvan Urban
Vertical and horizontal augmentation presents one of the greatest challenges of bone regeneration in implant dentistry. This is primarily due to the difficulty of the surgical procedure and its potential complications. Patient selection, patient preparation for surgery, precise surgical techniques and postoperative management are the key factors in reducing the rate of bone graft complications.
To predictably achieve successful bone augmentation angiogenesis, clot stability and space maintenance should be employed.
Another important factor is flap closure during bone augmentation. The key to achieving wound closure is not only the clinician’s ability in obtaining tension free release flap but also good soft tissue quality and quantity. In an attempt to achieve wound closure and hence graft stability, the buccal mucosa are often broadly released, and this often results in a severe apical translocation of the mucogingival line, loss of vestibule and keratinized mucosa (KM).
Recent research on vertical and horizontal ridge augmentation as well as soft tissue reconstruction will be presented.
Utilizing these procedures may lessen the need of harvested autogenous bone and may generally lead to decreased morbidity and therefore increased patient comfort and satisfaction associated with these regenerative procedures.
Learning objectives:
Optimizing Peri-Implant Esthetics: Ortho-Perio-Restorative Connection - Dr. Joseph Kan
Achieving anterior implant esthetics is a challenging and demanding procedure. To create implant restorations with harmonious gingival contour that emulate nature is a fusion of science and art. Understanding the biologic and physiologic limitations of the soft and hard tissue will facilitate predictability in simple to complex esthetic situations.
This presentation encompasses the Science, Art and Limitations of Orthodontics, Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry on esthetic implant reconstruction. Current implant treatment philosophies and methodologies for replacing currently missing teeth and the management of patients who will be losing a tooth or teeth in the esthetic zone will be discussed. Emphasis will be placed on diagnosis and treatment planning, surgical and prosthetic management of soft and hard tissue for optimal anterior implant esthetics.
